For all those who think a garage in the Inner Sunset/ Golden Gate Heights neighborhood has to be dark and dank, behold this project. In the process of nearly doubling this client's living space, we comfortably added a master suite with a spacious bathroom and view drenched deck, a guest room and bath, 3 closets, and a new laundry closet.

"Finally, a proper art studio."

This project was especially fun because the homeowners really rolled up their sleeves and were deeply involved in not only the overall design, but also the unique finishes. Like the 15th Avenue project, this one involved transforming a cobweb ridden storage room into a highly usable living area. While preserving a two car garage, we added a guest room with bathroom, a new art studio and a laundry closet.

From the start our client/ partners on this job had a specific vision and we all worked closely to make it happen. Be sure to check out all the re-claimed doors and how we repurposed them into a retractable room divider.

"Welcome to the 21st Century."

A lovely condominium with stunning easterly views, this space had fallen into a bit of disrepair, replete with rundown fixtures, worn out floors and finishes from the 1980's. Alongside both homeowner and architect, we gave these clients a brand new, modern kitchen, brand new hardwood floors throughout, a remodeled master bedroom and a new laundry closet. We left the views intact.

"From Pre-Depression to Post-Modern"

While at one time subdividing made sense – vast prairies divided into farms, estates into homes, homes into apartments – some home owners are blessed with a chance to buck the trend. On this project we took two cramped interior spaces that overlooked a spacious, but wasted center light well and forged the reverse, un-dividing a cramped three room arrangement into a wide open chef’s kitchen anchored by a well placed skylight, simple, clean finish lines and a relocated light well.

Diamond Street

"My bedroom used to overlook a leaky covered porch"

Most of what you see pictured here use to incorporate on of those old, dingy, 'I was a porch in my past life' spaces every San Franciscan knows. This project necessarily included a near complete demolition of the rear of this Noe Valley home – a poorly built, extremely water intruded space – in order to make way for a quiet, contemplative sleeping space, replete with bathroom and adjoining office.

"Walls and concrete slabs give way to connectedness and green"

The backyard here used to be a cold, red concrete slab, accessible only through a rickety steep staircase cut through the center of the house and built for the intrepid. Furthermore, the kitchen – the focal point of any rational household – was walled off from all the living areas, relying on the baroque charms of insufficient countertop space and a Wedgewood stove as distraction. The solution was simple. We undertook to remove two walls, one removed to join the kitchen with the dining and living areas and one to join the general living area with a newly landscaped backyard.
